Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Green Energy Sources

Get *the* Best Wind & Solar Pak, ever, Easy Earth Energy.... Let me know how you like it!

The United States produces 6 billion metric tons of CO2 annually. Yes that is Billion! Forty percent of carbondioxide (CO2) generated in the US comes from the generation of electricity. We are certainly not the only offender, but we are one of, if not the largest, contributor to the greenhouse gas problem.

The accumulation of greenhouse gasses is causing the earth to warm, reducing the size of ice deposits in the Arctic, Antartica, and Greenland. this has aready caused severe problems for small Pacific Island nations and threatens costal areas all over the world. The reduction of CO2 emissions is critical and needs to start with the production of electricity.

The Advantages of Green Energy seem obvious:
- Green energy is clean and can slow the effects of global warming by reducing CO2 emissions.
- Green energy is renewable unlike the natural gas and coal that are our primary sources now.
- It requires less maintenance that conventional equipment. Although the initial investment may be high, the long term savings would be significant.
- It can provide economic benefits to certain areas. For example, the leasing of land for wind farms could provide economic relief to many rural areas.

There are a few disadvantages that critics can point to.
- we have no control over the weather. The wind must blow and the sun must shine to use wind and solar technologies.
- The type of green energy used is to some degree determined by the geographic location, particularly for energies such as hydrothermal or geothermal.
- Some have even objected on aesthetic grounds, objecting to the site of a wind farm off shore.

It seems to me that the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. According to the Dept of Energy, if we increase the percentage of electricity produced by wind to 20% by 2030, we can reduce CO2 emissions of the electric sector by 25%. This is equivalent to taking an estimated 140 million vehicles off of the road.

We don’t really have a choice. If we don’t take action now, there will be a time when it will be too late.

Wind Turbine Types – How To Trap Wind Energy For Productive Use

wind power is conversion of energy from the wind to be used productively in many ways. There are many machines, wind turbines, which transform the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy by converting it. The mechanical energy then works with the kinetic energy so that it becomes balanced into a mechanical system. Once this mechanical energy is turned into electricity this system is then known as a wind turbine.

Horizontal Axis and Vertical Axis are the two different types of wind turbines that can be found. The Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine is the more popular of the two and features a main rotor shaft and a generator which are located at the top of the turbine. There is a gearbox attached to most of these turbines, so that more electricity can be generated by the quicker turning of the blades. The turbine are tall towers with blades which create turbulence for power, and turn either upwards or downwards. In high winds, upward blades can crack and breakdown as they are not able to withstand these conditions for too long. Downward blades are in line and face the wind so they last longer. They are even durable against the high winds so do not break which helps to keep down the cost.

The Different Types of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines

Windmills – They usually consist of four or more blades that are normally short. There are some that are made up of wood and were first used to grind up grain. Winds rotate the mechanism of the blades which turned a mill that the grains ran through so that it was crushed.

Rural Windmills – These originated from Australia and were later built all over the U.S.A. Farmers found these windmills useful in pumping water into the fields and electricity for the barns. There are several blades on this type of windmill, which are still in use today and can be seen in the fields. So that electricity could be carried for lighting or even a radio, they were constructed using metal.

Modern Turbines – These are used today and what we see standing in our fields. The features are of three blades which become pointed towards the ends. The reasons for this unusual shape is after trials and testing, they proved to be the strongest for exceeding up to 6 times more wind velocity, which allowed for high efficiency and was more reliable.

This sort of wind turbine has many advantages including being bendable, durable, it has stability, is strong and also tall. On the other end, the disadvantages are that they are not as in huge demand, they are unable to operate if they are too close to the ground, installing them is a difficult job as well as transporting them by sea. There are also concerns that they can affect radar, and they can suffer from strutual damage during high storms and with wear and tear.

So as you can see, there are good and bad points to buying and installing these types of turbines. They do work so whether you choose to have one or several if you own a field is up to you. They are good to help generate electricity and many other things that we would might well have to do without.

Build a Wind Generator Can You Really Do It? by David NeichWind generators are getting very popular these days and no wonder due to the overwhelming a

Advantages and Disadvantages of Wind Energy

by David Neich

This article will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy. Some of these might seem apparent already but we will delve into it throughout the article.

Once wind turbines are setup they do create very good efficiency for power but it’s the setting up of the turbines that makes the process questionable. In the long run there is no doubt that it’s a very good equation but getting their can be a bit tricky. Let’s break it down in a way that explains the process very clearly.

1. Disadvantages of Wind Energy.

The main one that comes to mind is the sheer cost of building the turbines. Based on that we are talking about major power generation and the cost of building the turbines including the concrete, the steel and all the foundation work needed to construct them. There is also the land that needs to be cleared to allow them to be built, this is really the main disadvantage of wind energy.

With the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy being discussed so much it’s the issue of carrying the power back to the grid therefore you need power lines and transformers to do this, so of course they have to be constructed in the first place. Also all the materials that is needed to have this completed is very resource intensive anyway, but over time it certainly works out better than the current situation. Why not build a solar water heaterand save up to 65% on your energy consumption.

The issue of displacement of wildlife has to be brought into the equation as well. If there is basically no impact on this that’s exactly what we wanted, there will always be the issue of animals getting court in the turbine rotors and being killed but generally speaking that would be at a minimum. This is the price of progress in many ways unfortunately.

2. Advantages of Wind Energy.

The energy that is generated from wind power is very substantial and certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. Major wind turbines located off the mainland are approximately 50% more efficient than the ones that are on the mainland. This is mainly put down to sea breezes and with that with very little greenhouse gas emissions due to the conversion process.

Going back to the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy, it’s the cost of traditional energy compared to wind energy is where the the major advantage is, the main part is the outlay initially, some might say that it’s very expensive and I would challenge them to think compared to what. The ongoing costs of traditional energy or the long term prospects of renewable energy that once setup will never have to be paid for again.

An obvious part of wind energy generation is the ability to store that energy for use later, the wind doesn’t always blow so we certainly need to store it.

So far we have only discussed large scale wind generator’s or wind farm arrangements. Let’s have a brief look at how this can benefit you on a small scale basis for your home.

If you build a wind generator you can harness the wind energy to benefit you in several ways. The main one obviously is a financial saving which would equate to approximately $100 a month which can add up to be quite significant by the end of the year. The other factor is that you don’t have to rely on anyone but your self and that the energy being generated is totally free and that you did it.

Also knowing that if you have a blackout or some form of outage you have a backup. Having said this, the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy is will be discussed very much into the future, but if you have your own wind energy being generated by a wind generator there is disadvantage at all and there is nothing to worry about because you’re not needing to rely on the grid.

If you want to get the most comprehensive manual and the most proven system on the market go to Alternative Energy Waysand get started to day, it is the best way to take advantage of wind energy.

I really hope that my articles are helpful and can assist you in moving ahead in your chosen fields, to your success and if you need more info on alternative energy head over to www.alternativeenergyadvice.net

The advantages and disadvantages of wind energy are best examined separately. The advantages of this source of power include:

• Clean energy – Unlike fossil fuel combustion-based energy production, wind power does not cause environmental damage. This source of energy simply does not produce greenhouse gasses like coal and natural gas do.

• It’s renewable – Of all the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy, this is one of the biggest points that make wind stand out. Unlike fossil fuels, wind energy simply cannot be depleted.

• Its costs – This is another major perk on the list of advantages and disadvantages of wind energy. The reality is wind power is fairly cheap in comparison to other forms of renewable energy. Its costs are estimated at roughly 6 cents per kilowatt hour.

• Its multipurpose functioning – The creation of wind farms in rural areas can assist the economy. This type of harvesting operation can take place on land that is used for ranging and farming food, as well. This means farmers can earn eadvantages and disadvantages of wind energyest energy.
While the pros on the list of advantages and disadvantages of wind energy are quite strong, there are some cons people need to be aware of.

They include:

• Cost competiveness – It is not always feasible for the production of wind energy to compete with the pricing of fossil fuel based energy. This, however, is changing.

• Access – This can be one of the biggest cons on the list of advantages and disadvantages of wind energy. The reality is the best producing wind farms are in remote locations. This can make overseeing sites and providing maintenance difficult. It can also impede plugging into the grid.

• Intermittent nature – Like it or not, wind power can be fickle. Production does tend to be intermittent and can cause some supply issues.

The advantages and disadvantages of wind energy aside, this form of power is becoming more popular. Its use now accounts for 1 percent of the world’s total energy production. This form of power is widely used in countries all over the world, including Denmark, Germany, the United States and Spain.

As the need to replace fossil fuels becomes very evident, the spotlight is on this renewable source of energy for good reasons.

Today, however, all of that has changed. Thanks to a better understanding of the advantages of wind energy, its use and production is on the rise in a very big way.

The advantages of wind energy are known and put into practice in countries all over the world. From India and China to America and Denmark, the power of the wind is used to heat and cool homes, keep lights running and more.

The increase in wind energy use has been prevalent in the last few years. In America, for example, the capacity for production of wind power grew by 45 percent in the year 2007 alone.

European countries, such as Spain and Germany, rely on wind power to augment to their electrical grids to the tune of a few percent of total power production. Denmark, however, boasts the highest use at 20 percent of its total electrical production.

So, how are the advantages of wind energy fueling the increased movement toward this form of alternative power?

A careful examination of the benefits of wind’s use will make this clear. The pros of using wind power include:

• Cost effectiveness – As fossil fuels continue to be more costly, many power producers are looking for viable alternatives. Of all of the choices out there, wind power is the most economical of the renewable energy sources. This is good news for power companies that need to boost their capacity and want to do so in a greener, yet efficient way.

• The green factor – This is one of the biggest advantages of wind energy. The reality is that wind is a renewable resource. It does not go away – at least for long. Plus, it is a clean source of energy. Wind power does not release emissions into the atmosphere. It does not produce greenhouse gases. And, it doesn’t leave a negative footprint behind.

• The capacity – Although it does take fairly sizeable wind farms to produce energy for the power grid, the reality is the capacity turbines can produce is rather impressive. In America, for example, one percent of the total energy production today now comes from wind power.

The advantages of wind energy are making this alternative power source stand out from the pack. This cleaner, cost-effective alternative to fossil fuels has been making big headway in recent years for very good reasons.

Disadvantages of Wind Power Revised

The main and most crucial disadvantages of wind power: what they are and how they can be overcomed.

Following in the tradition of Don Quixote, the immortal creation of Cervantes, we are finding quite a few causes to complain about windmills and wind power systems. Now that the novelty of the system has worn out a little and the initial enthusiasm surrounding wind power systems has also diminished somewhat, we have started to take a closer look at wind power systems and have unearthed a few disadvantages of the system. Let’s take a closer look.

Wind power, above everything else, continues to remain one of the best alternative measures of generating power and electricity. The clean, green and non-polluting nature of the energy that it produces has made wind power immensely popular with those among us who care about the environment and wish to leave behind a better world for their children. Some even claimed wind power to be better than solar power as the former continued working even after sunset. The energy produced was also virtually free and some wind power systems worked so well that they completely replaced the need for having any other source of power. However, there are two disadvantages. First, the high cost of the wind turbines and secondly, the need to find the right location in order to make such a system work properly. While turbines, battery banks and electronic controllers are quite expensive by most standards, to make matters worse, setting up a wind power is quite a daunting task by itself. Moreover, there are maintenance hassles to take care of on a regular basis.

The main disadvantage, however, is perhaps due to the highly unpredictable nature of wind itself. While it may be blowing fair and strong one moment, the very next could see a sudden drop in its power. And as everybody knows, wind power systems need fairly strong winds blowing consistently to produce any appreciable amount of energy.

However, even though such disadvantages exist, the fact remains that wind power still packs quite a punch as far as its popularity is concerned. In fact, wind power has so many things going in its favor that its advantages far outweigh the handful of disadvantages that it might have. It has to be mentioned in this context that most of the so called disadvantages are actually technical challenges – this is natural considering the fact that wind power as a technology is still evolving. With continuing research and given some more time, the technology will surely improve and eventually, make these disadvantages disappear.

The eco-friendly and economical nature of wind power still makes it the top bet in alternative power sources. Just by switching over to wind power, you will be surprised at how much savings you can actually make on your monthly energy consumption bills! And above all, you can also keep the environment clean and green. No wonder these are still the best reasons why millions around the world are turning to wind power every year.

Continuing research in the field of alternative energy production, especially solar and wind power systems is making these systems more powerful, more dependable and increasingly affordable. It will not be long before all the current disadvantages of using wind power will be gone for good and it will find even wider acceptance around the globe. By embracing wind and solar power, mankind can stop the reckless exploitation of fossil fuels for energy production, curb environmental pollution and halt global warming by eliminating harmful emissions, and thus pave the way for a greener tomorrow for our children.

We have to rely on clean energy sources more and more because the reserve of fossil fuel that we have is getting diminished day by day. The best time to end the depletion is now. Mankind should start looking into alternatives such as solar power and wind power now.

Thanks to all the technological advancements made in recent years in the field of wind energy systems, you can install a wind power system in your home quite easily nowadays. In fact, a completely functional wind power system can be set up all by oneself. However, consulting a good step-by-step guide is strongly recommended to ensure a trouble-free and successful installation. Just ensure that you have the knowledge to help you select the right location, buy the right equipment at the right prices, wire the system correctly, and of course, take all the necessary safety precautions.

Wind Energy Conversion Systems

Meaning of wind energy: Its sources; Nature of the main wind energy conversion systems

Several factors related to the environment can combine to transform solar energy into wind. The surface of the planet earth is, by nature, not uniform. These uneven earth terrains can only be unequally warmed up by the sun. As a natural consequence, some places on the planet remain cooler than certain other areas. The air in the warm regions weighs less due to lower density levels. Hence, it begins to move up. The void hence created gets soon taken up by the colder, denser air that rushes in from the local areas. This type of motion in air produces a type of kinetic energy (or motional energy). Wind energy can be acquired by properly processing this kinetic energy by completely updated machines. Wind energy turbines and wind mills are the two wind energy conversion systems that are most commonly in use.

The different wind energy conversion systems

Mechanical energy or electrical power can be obtained from properly treating wind energy, by the wind energy generators, according to the specific requirements. Two such generators have been named above. Electricity is obtained from wind energy by using wind turbines. Wind mills can process wind resources to generate mechanical energy. Which one of the two conversion systems is more efficient, or can cut down costs more can be deduced from an in-depth study of these systems.

The way of working of wind turbines is rather easy. A normal wind turbine generally has two to three blades. These blades are put up to a rotor, which is then implanted on to a main shaft. The shaft, in turn, is attached to an electric generator. When the latter starts to move, electric power starts to get produced. Wind turbines that are supposed to generated electricity are usually put up on raised sites that are about 30 meters (or, 100 feet) raised from the ground level. A desirable quantity of electricity can be obtained from these turbines, since the latter get less roiling winds (with greater velocities) at those sites. The number of blades of a windmill is, on the other hand, the most crucial determinant of the efficiency of the latter devices. The ability to produce outputs also varies with the speed at which wind blows in an area. Tjaskers, wind pumps are some of the types of windmills (differentiated on the basis of their functions). Tjaskers are used to pump up water from places which need a smaller head. On the same token, wind pumps are those wind mills that are used in wells or drainage areas for pumping out water. The water thus obtained can be used by human beings. The cattle can also drink this water. A comparative study of the couple of wind energy conversion systems mentioned above is often required to find their efficiency and relative cost levels.

Pros and cons of using wind energy conversion systems

The popularity of wind energy system is currently on a consistent upward trend. The fact that, it uses a free source of fuel – the wind, which is also easily renewable, is a significant cause of this growing popularity. Nor do these systems, unlike their fossil fuel plant predecessors, emit environmentally damaging greenhouse gases that can pollute the atmosphere. Hence, the risks of acid rains or damage of the layers of the layers of the atmosphere (by the greenhouse gases) disappear when these wind energy conversion systems are used. These systems generally are put up on ranches in rural areas, for the best performance. The supply of wind is abundant as well, with no chances of exhaustion as long as the sun remains present. Economic practicality is another advantage of these wind energy units, since farmers can continue earning a steady flow of income from the land they take on lease for setting up these energy units. The wind power units take up only a tiny section of this land, making such income generation possible all round the year.

Despite there are manifold benefits of these wind energy systems, the latter has a notable downside too. Wind flow is an involuntary phenomenon which can be rather irregular, not reaching the required places within the scheduled time. Also, these wind energy units should ideally be built at sites located far away from posh areas. Thus, the places that actually need the electricity from these plants might not get it.

However, this disadvantage has not come in the way of the wind energy plants becoming increasingly popular all over the world. Indeed the present day world needs an energy source that can sustain the atmosphere and can be renewed.

It is simply impossible to remain unaware of the innumerable benefits of wind energy conversion systems. It is recommended that you set up such a system at your home, after learning about them from a manual. Such a manual would have detailed stepwise instructions on the installation of the system, the wiring patterns used, the places where cheap components, along with free batteries, can be found, and the necessary safeguards. You will also get to know which part of the home would be ideal for installing the system. Once correctly installed, these wind energy conversion systems give off multifarious financial and ecological benefits.

Wind Energy Generator: Exposed

Wind energy generator: An explanation

Among the various sources of renewable energy, wind is one of the most popular ones. The flow of wind that earth receives is determined by the uneven nature of the planet’s surface, the planetary rotations, the varying propensities of heat absorption at different atmospheric levels, and the planet’s varying vegetation types. Even the oceans and sea-bodies can influence wind flows on earth. Motion energy is usually generated from the movement of the air. The former can then be harnessed to generate a mechanical power, called wind energy. A wind energy generator (like a wind turbine or a wind mill) is such a device that can actually process this energy of motion.

Wind energy generators: Their technique of working

Wind mills and wind turbines are the two most often used wind energy generators that can generate electricity or mechanical energy. Electricity generation from wind energy is accomplished by wind turbines. Wind mills, alternatively, are used to produce mechanical power from wind resources. Actions like water pumping and corn grinding can be performed by using this mechanical energy. Wind turbines are, however, more popular devices, since they use the latest sophisticated techniques. An idea of the relative cost-saving nature and efficiency levels of the two systems require a deeper study of these equipments.

How do wind turbines function? The turbines generally have a rotor, to which two (or, at times, three) blades are affixed. Then, the rotor with the blades is connected to the main shaft. The latter, when connected to a generator, can make it spin, thereby generating electrical power. Also, wind flows are less intermittent and have higher velocities at heights of around 30 meters (or, 100 feet). Hence, in order to obtain a sizeable output, a wind turbine needs to be set up at such heights. At the other end, we have wind mills, the performance and efficiency levels are determined by the number of their blades only. More energy can be obtained by a greater number of blades. A minimum of 15 miles per hour (mph) of wind velocity is required for satisfactory performance of the wind mills. Wind pumps and tjaskers are, in turn, two types of wind mills – classified on the basis of purpose they serve. People can benefit from the water that can be pumped out by wind pumps; it can also used for drinking by cattle. Again, for bringing out water from locations requiring low heads, drainage wind mills, like tjaskers, are used. The patterns of wind flow, unique requirements of an area as well as the final usage of the wind energy determines which of the wind energy generators are more efficient and involves less costs. Thus, a detailed study of the systems is called for.

It cannot be overlooked that wind energy is one of the fastest developing energy resources all over the world. Wind resources, unlike other conventional power plants, do not pollute the atmosphere. This factor is extremely advantageous, since the greenhouse gases that are released by the fossil fuel (like coal or natural gas) plants can cause acid rains that can adversely affect the different atmospheric levels. There are no chances of depletion in the stock of wind energy either. Nor are any costs need to be incurred for acquiring the wind resources for these systems. All these factors contribute to the great overall popularity of the wind energy generating plants. Economic advantages can also be obtained from the usage of these systems, since only a small fraction of the land taken on lease for installing wind energy systems are actually occupied by these units. Thus, farming can be carried on the rest of the land. Renting out this land area to the owners of the wind power units, by the farmers, is also common. The sites that suit the functioning of these systems ideally are located on rural ranch areas. Wind resources can be easily renewed as well.

The ever-improving modern techniques are expected to eliminate any minor disadvantages that the wind energy systems might have. In the current, environmentally conscious and constantly developing world, wind energy is indeed a viable energy resource.

There are numerous finance-related advantages of a wind energy generator. The latter positively affects the environment as well. Thus, you should ideally have such a system installed in your home. An instruction manual makes this job considerably easier. A manual would cover all the necessary topics, ranging from the steps to set up the system, the availability of free batteries and relatively cheap parts of the system, the wiring patterns of the latter, where the generator should be installed within the house for best results. Safety guidelines are also explained in detail in such a training manual too.

The REAL Cost Of Wind Energy

It is safe to say that wind energy is essentially free energy. It comes from the heating effect of the earth’s surface by the sun. This heating effect is irregular because of the uneven surface of the earth. It therefore gives rise to airstreams that move between the cooler zones and the hotter zones. This is the wind that blows and that makes the blades on the wind turbines move and thus generate electricity.

Wind energy business model: financing of wind energy

In the nineteen eighties the wind energy generators that were installed typically showed a cost of 30 cents per kilowatt-hour period. This in itself was not a very attractive price compared to the conventional power generators that existed already. However over the last twenty years fossil fuel prices have gone up, and wind generation prices have come down. Today we see a reduction of almost 80 percent in the cost per kilowatt-hour thanks to these factors and the latest high technology wind turbine generators. 5 cents per kilowatt-hour is a common phenomenon now. This is clearly an extremely advantageous rate at which to pay for one’s electricity.

Further advantages favor wind energy compared to fossil fuels. Wind energy is easily harvested on farms and ranches, which have an abundant supply of this free energy source. Wind energy is available to anyone who lives in an area where the wind blows. There are no imports necessary or even possible from foreign countries. This is a great difference compared to fossil fuels where importing large quantities of such fuels is a normal if unfortunate occurrence. Fossil fuels of course also are highly polluting and not a renewable source of energy.

To make sure that the wind energy generation can be done in a profitable and effective manner, it is necessary to select a site with certain minimum criteria. Wind speed, for example, which is directly correlated to the amounts of electricity that can be generated, must be at least 5m per second in this case.

Improving the financials for wind energy even further

A wind energy developer applying utility financing to wind energy power plants can already generate wind power for as low as 5 cents per kilowatt-hour from a standard 50 MW wind power plant. However this price for kilowatt-hour can drop to as little as 3,5 cents, which is a 30 percent reduction. Wind power generation in this sense is even more attractive compared to say gas power plants and it is clear that wind power generation costs will continue to decrease in the coming years.

Save money and save the environment at the same time!

The environmental question of course is a very important one concerning wind energy and any other renewable energy source. Wind energy is clean. This is in comparison to say coal emissions from coal fired energy plants, which release very small dust particles into the atmosphere. These dust particles can have a serious sometimes fatal effect on human beings because of the cardiovascular and respiratory diseases that can be provoked. They may also result in a higher infant mortality rates for the same reason. Coal plants of course are also responsible for the production of greenhouse gases and the phenomenon such as acid rain. Use of coal power plants can be clearly linked to both a worsening visibility in the earth’s atmosphere and global warming.

Wind power now needs to be set-up with the long-term power generation contracts to solidify and consolidates market acceptance of this new and renewable energy source. The advantages that should allow this to happen include the minimum cost of life cycle for wind energy plants, because they have minimum operating expenses and no fuel purchase is necessary. Wind energy can be used and reused, but will never contribute to any of the pollution that is generated by the conventional fossil fuel power plants.
