An energy-efficient home under construction by...

We would all like to think that our homes are efficient when it comes to using energy. In actual fact many of us are falling down on the job.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be difficult to make changes that will make a difference to you. Once you start altering the way you live you will notice your energy bills coming down as well. This is a great spur to inspire you to look for other ways to improve your home as well.

So what can you do right now to make a difference?

Look around your home and see where all your plug sockets are. Most homes have a lot of them – and most homes also leave them switched to the on position even when the item that is plugged in isn’t being used.

Not every item can be switched off of course; if you tried it with your fridge freezer you would wake up to a large puddle the next morning. What about your kettle, your toaster, and any floor standing lights that you leave plugged in all the time? These don’t need to have the switch flicked on unless you are going to use them – and turning them off the rest of the time will save on energy throughout the year.

This is a good start, but there is a lot more you can do in other areas too. Take the task of heating your home for example. How much of the heat that comes out of your radiators escapes out of the house? If your windows are old there could well be gaps that will let the heat escape.

Look in less likely places as well. If it is windy outside and you can feel a draught from somewhere, take the time to find out where it is coming from. Draughts can get in through all kinds of gaps, and plugging them all up will prevent your house losing heat. You will probably find you can turn your heating down as well.

Of course not every energy efficient tactic is an easy and cheap one to take on. You will get the opportunity to use them eventually. If one of your kitchen appliances should break down for example, make sure you replace it with one that is energy efficient. All appliances are rated from A to G, and if you can find an A rated appliance which also has one or two plus symbols next to it, it will be better still.

The bottom line is that every little change you make can save you money on your electricity bill. When you add up those changes over the course of a year, you could be saving a lot of money by becoming more energy efficient at home.

Energy Efficiency in the Home

Own work taken using Kodak DX6490 Digital Came...

Finally, after six years of price hikes, fuel prices have begun to drop. But the average household still spends a huge amount on essential electricity, gas and water, so if you want to push your bills even lower and help the environment by cutting down your carbon emissions, then read on for few energy efficiency tips.
Have a shower
Swapping long soaks in the tub for quick refreshing showers uses 40 per cent less water, so if you have a water meter this will make a significant difference to your bills and help you to do your bit for water conservation, especially in the dry summer months.
If you don’t already have a water meter fitted at your home, get one installed so that you only pay for the water that you actually use. This will encourage you to keep an eye on the amount that you waste too.
Choose the right bulbs
The Government wants to start phasing out traditional light bulbs because of the amount of energy they waste. Using energy efficient ones not only saves on your electricity bill, they also last much longer so you won’t have to replace them as often.
Don’t just standby
Leaving appliances on standby rather than turning them off at the wall wastes so much electricity. Appliances can continue to use up to 70 per cent of their active energy while on standby, so think of the difference that you could make by just turning them off properly.
Leaving chargers on but unused is also a huge waste. You could be paying £10 a year for each charger you leave in, and when you add up your laptop, mobile phone, iPod and handheld home phone chargers, it really begins to add up.
Blow out the pilot
If you have an electric shower and cooker at home, you could turn off your gas pilot light once the weather is warm enough. Because while the pilot light is burning, your gas supply is constantly leaking away, even when your heating is off.
Cool it
Turning down you thermostat by just one degree centigrade can reduce your annual energy bill by 10 per cent. This is a difference that you’ll barely notice – until your bill comes in up to £49 a year cheaper.
Bleed your radiators
Trapped air inside your radiators makes them less efficient but bleeding them (releasing the air) is easy and makes them perform much better.
Wrap up warm
Insulating your home will save you loads on heating bills and will be an investment that will continue to save you money year after year. You can insulate your wall cavities, roof and windows and lag your boiler. All this can be a bit pricy but even simple things like hanging thick curtains and laying draft excluders at doors will make a difference.
Go A-grade
Whenever you need to buy a new fridge, freezer or boiler, always opt for an “A” rated one. These will save you money on you electricity bills as they’re cheaper to run and are also so much better for the environment.
Get technical
There are now a whole host of gadgets available to save the planet and your pocket at the same time. These range from washing powder replacements to gadgets that stop your fridge from over-working and wasting electricity. You can even get wind-up radios, water powered clocks and solar powered lights.
Switch your supplier
By moving to a new supplier you can save money on your bills by taking advantage of new-customer-only deals and sign up to a “green tariff” at the same time. Almost all providers now offer environmentally friendly deals so you could end up cutting your bills and investing in renewable energy sources at the same time.

Home Efficiency, Cellulose Insulation, Energy Efficiency

Enhancing the energy efficiency of your homes not only cuts down your monthly energy bills but does a lot of good to the environment as well. Therefore, enhancing home efficiency appears to be a smart move. Professional insulators offer services to gauge the energy efficiency in your house and to recommend appropriate actions.

Home efficiency reports prepared by such professional insulators allow the homeowners to employ various means to increase the Energy Efficiency of their living space. One of the extensively used method of attaining maximum energy efficiency is by installing adequate insulation. Cellulose installation is considered to be one of the best choices due to the various benefits offered by it.

Cellulose is available in a wide variety of forms to suit the type of insulation in a particular space. Loose-fill cellulose is used for filling in the crevices and holes in walls and ceilings. This variant of cellulose is generally used for retrofitting old buildings, and is utilized as an insulation option for new constructs as well.

Applied cellulose or wet spray is used for wall insulation in new buildings. This type of cellulose insulation leads to better sealing and does not require regular maintenance. The problems caused by moisture is taken care of by a moisture retardant chemical that restricts any kind of organic growth on the insulation material.

Stabilized cellulose is another alternative for insulation of ceilings. Extra moisture added to the preparation not only provides for better adhesion to the structure but also reduces the amount of cellulose needed for insulation, thereby preventing any possible fall-off later.

Being a natural plant product, cellulose can be recycled as well. As a result, cellulose insulation is slowly gaining ground as an eco-friendly option. The presence of boric acid, which is added during treatment, makes cellulose insulation fire-retardant, thereby improving its effectiveness.

Cellulose does not pose any health or environmental threats either during installation or later, unlike its synthetic counterparts. Not only this, cellulose is an easily available product, therefore cellulose insulation can be manufactured locally as well. There is no proven side-effect or health hazard that accompany Cellulose Insulation, therefore making it a safe option to opt for.

Therefore, by using cellulose insulation you can increase your savings by enhancing the thermal performance of your house. Not only this, you can also control pests and mold growth. Thus, using such measures you can increase your overall Home Efficiency manifolds.

Energy Efficiency May Not Decrease Energy Usage

As light bulbs and other electronic devices become more energy efficient, a question arises. Will we actually use less electricity? A study undertaken by an LED researcher from Sandia National Laboratories shows that it is likely people will simply ramp up their light bulb usage to match previous levels.

This stems from how ingrained repetitive things can become in us. If someone has been paying $200 a month on electricity and usage of light bulbs and then switches to compact fluorescent light bulbs or installs more efficient heating/cooling which results in a lower bill, that person will probably just end up using electricity more often. They’ve grown accustomed to the price of electricity and when they see the bill is lower, they’re more apt to increase energy and light bulb usage than reduce it because their spending is already adjusted to the higher amount.

Jeff Tsao, the leader of the aforementioned study notes that throughout history electricity usage has remained relatively constant despite advances in technology and energy efficiency. Dating as far back as A.D. 1700 and candle/oil/gas fueled lighting, light and the use of light bulbs has remained more or less a constant fraction of per capita gross domestic product. More light also means more light pollution, which is fast becoming a problem in developed countries across the world. When is the last time you were able to see a night sky full of shining stars?

People’s attitudes toward consumption can also be seen in vehicles. More fuel-efficient vehicles actually entice people to drive more, which can cause the fuel efficiency to be moot and not actually reduce driving or usage of fuel. Because we become so accustomed to our habits we are more likely to think things like “I was already paying this much to drive/use light bulbs this much, now I can pay the same amount but use them way more!” We have to remember that simply owning energy efficient technology is not enough; we have to have more energy efficient thinking as well!

Exercising Energy Efficiency by Making use of Renewable Energy Resources

A majority of you must have seen the phrase Renewable energy in your environmental science textbooks as well as nature-based magazines. This type of energy resource is derived from organic products therefore; it is biodegradable and never-ending in nature. Sun, water, blowing wind, biological ingredients and geothermal forces are employed for the creation of this form of energy. In comparison to other conventional types of energies like fossil fuels and petrol, natural energy sources are advantageous, eco-friendly and pollution-free therefore; a large number of people are going for these alternate sources of energy.

Renewable energy is helpful for the unemployed youngsters in terms of offering job opportunities. This is simply because various corporate bodies initiate ventures that support eco-friendly causes and they focus on energy efficiency. If these alternate energy sources are correctly harnessed, numerous countries will get an opportunity to improve their gross annual budget by reducing the expenses of oil and coal import-export. Besides, we can make this world a safe, pollution-free as well as unique place to live in, for our future generations. Instead of wasting cash on purchasing non-recyclable energy resources, executive bodies should concentrate on using these alternate resources!

After all that complicated promotion of green movement, the existing population has become aware of the phrase energy efficiency. Several large organizations even exercise appropriate plans to trim down unnecessary energy consumption. Instead of altering the lighting systems totally, individuals have started utilizing fluorescent bulbs in place of incandescent bulbs, in their offices. Even if you do not have enough funds to use alternate energy like photo voltaic cells, solar water heater etc. you may always turn off unnecessary lighting to save your power consumption.

To discover if the establishment is getting benefits by employing these systems, an energy efficiency consultant department has been set up to carry out audits and research in different localities. They’ve professionals that detect problematic places and find out the average power intake per square foot. If the total consumption is more than the normal value, an immediate action is taken and energy saving retrofit is mounted inside the buildings.

Apart from clipping electricity bills and utilizing renewable energy resources, several agencies utilize exclusively designed vehicles that lower carbon emissions. This further leads to economical advantages in the form of tradable emissions credits. In case you wish to acquire more information regarding this topic, you may consult an experienced environmentalist or, take a look at the online blogs, weekly newsletters and nature periodicals published in your area. Go green this year!

Scientists claim that global warming is fast approaching and satellites ratify their claims with pictures of melting icebergs in Antarctica and Arctic. Indeed it is high time to wake up and take notice, before it is too late. The results have been initiatives in technologies that promise significant energy efficiency and focus on going green; the air conditioning and other mechanical services included.

Studies reveal that a total of 30% to 40% energy consumed by human kind is used up in buildings – almost 50% of the energy used in Australia is used for cooling and heating commercial complexes alone. These enormous figures can be contained if focus is constantly placed on going green, using lesser energy and using sustainable designs in buildings. The process starts right from construction of the building to its Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC).

Apparently there has been an increasing focus on achieving energy efficiency, which implies changes in many areas.

• Behavioural changes – People consuming energy with conscience and with a focus on using lesser energy.

• Technological changes — Use of Environmentally Sustainable Designs and technologies that consume lesser energy and promote energy efficiency.

• Government regulations in this connection, including guidelines for valuing green. For example, now there is a concept of NABERS accredited assessors that inspect a building for sustainable performance and give away Australian Building Greenhouse Rating (ABGR) (aka NABERS Energy for offices.)

At present in Australia, the greener your building is the better value you fetch out of it. The reasons are genuine as well. Building with ‘green value’ show better energy audit, like

• Lesser building operating costs

• Ease to sell, rent and retain tenants

• Better rates of occupancy overall.

Conclusion — Going green is not only good for your conscience; it is also good for your pocket!

Know more about increasing energy efficiency by visiting a website of a Green Building company.

Having a residential energy efficiency home is more than just turning down the thermostat in the winter and changing your furnace filter twice a year. While those things do help along with regular cleaning of the condenser of your air conditioner, there is so much more you can do.

The most obvious way for your home to become more energy efficient is to install new Energy Star component to your HVAC system. This will conserve energy because the units will use less but that is not the only thing you can do nor is it always necessary.

There are many less expensive ways to help do your part to conserve more energy that is used to make the inside of your home more comfortable. The least expensive way is to install weather stripping on all the windows and doors. This will help seal the small leaks that allow the inside environment, you paid for to create, from needlessly escaping.

Another large energy saving path is to install double pane glass in your windows or cover them with plastic. While the plastic is cost efficient many prefer the look of glass which is energy efficient in both the summer and winter months.

For many years in the past homeowners would manually adjust their thermostats at night and when they left the house. Today, with the advance in technology there are programmable thermostats that adjust the temperature in your home automatically. While it does do the same job as when it is preformed manually, the advantage is you can wake up in a warm house instead of crawling out of bed when it is cold and having to wait for the house to warm up.

These are a few helpful tips to make your home a residential energy efficiency place to dwell in comfort.

Visit our YouTube channel for videos helping home owners perform routine maintenance to your HVAC systems ensuring optimal performance.

The Energy Efficiency Tax Credit – How to Get It

On Oct. 3, 2008, President George W. Bush signed into law the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. As part of this piece of legislation, the United States government is offering tax incentives for consumers and businesses to purchase and install certain energy-efficient home improvement products like skylights, hybrid and electric automobiles, and water heating equipment.

Included in the water heating category are tankless water heaters, which are eligible for energy tax credits. Rheem and Takagi are among the qualifying manufacturers.

Energy tax credits of $300 had been available for home improvements placed in service from Jan. 1, 2009 through Dec. 21, 2009. Then, on Feb. 17, 2009, President Obama made two significant revisions to the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act.

He first extended the available energy tax credits through Dec. 31, 2010, then increased the total available tax credit to an equivalent of 30% of the full purchase price and installation price with a cap of $1500.

According to ENERGY STAR, the IRS defines “placed in service” as when the property is ready and available for use. All ENERGY STAR-qualified whole-home gas tankless and gas condensing models with an energy factor of 0.80 or greater WILL qualify.

The qualifier is based on when the unit is placed in service, so units purchased before Jan. 1, 2009 but not yet installed may qualify if installed between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2010.

Now the bad news.

Any qualified home improvements made in 2008 or earlier are NOT eligible for the energy tax credit. And ENERGY STAR-qualified, high-efficiency gas storage water heaters (those that store water in a large tank) will also NOT qualify. Also, new construction and rentals do NOT qualify.

So, what’s the difference between a tax credit and a tax break? A tax credit is usually more valuable than an equivalent tax deduction, and it directly reduces the taxable amount due dollar-for-dollar. For example, if you receive a $500 tax credit, $500 is subtracted from your overall tax owed, and if you qualify for a refund, your refund will reflect this credit.

On the other hand, a tax break only removes a percentage of the tax you owe by reducing your overall taxable income. So the actual value of the tax break could vary depending on each household’s actual taxable income.

Be sure to save any receipt and manufacturer’s certification statement for tax purposes. And for complete information on products covered by the energy tax credit, visit the ENERGY Star website.

For homeowners, the clock is ticking on when fixtures and appliances should be replaced. With tax incentives, it’s a prudent choice to purchase an energy-efficient upgrade. But ultimately, it’s up to you.

Until next time, Happy Home Improving!

Green Plumbing Provides Water Conservation and Energy Efficiency

Green plumbing is the most energy efficient plumbing system that also provides for water conservation. Green products associated with plumbing systems are hot water demand systems and tankless water heaters.

Green plumbing products, energy efficiency, and water conservation

Green plumbing is plumbing designed to be the most energy efficient and at the same time conserve the most water. This boils down to the hot water plumbing since the cold water side does not consume, lose, or waste energy or water. Typical products associated with such plumbing systems are tankless water heaters and hot water demand systems.

Hot water plumbing systems

The hot water plumbing is another story. The pipes end up full of hot water after each use, then cooling off, wasting a huge amount of energy.  Then the cooled off hot water in the pipes from the previous use must be purged in order to obtain hot water at the fixture the next time it’s used. This is not a good way to provide water conservation.

If the water heater is located a long way from the point of use, the water temperature will be lower at the fixture than at the outlet of the tank due to the heat energy lost along the length of the pipe.

Having identified the factors involved in efficient plumbing systems; water wastage and energy loss from the distribution piping, we can try to find ways to make the plumbing system more efficient.

Pipe Insulation

Insulating the hot water piping contributes to efficient plumbing.  Since while you wait for the hot water to arrive, you are wastefully running water down the drain, minimizing the wait for hot water will minimize the amount of water being wasted.

Part of the delay in the arrival of hot water is due to the fact that the piping material absorbs the heat from the water as it travels through the pipe, so when the hot water arrives it has already cooled off and you have to wait a little longer.  The longer the piping run is the worse the problem becomes.

By insulating the pipes, they do not get as cold and thus they absorb less heat from the hot water traveling to the fixture. Your hot water reaches you faster and you run less water down the drain. Insulating your pipes contributes to water conservation.

The temperature drop long the pipe on those long runs is less due to the insulation, resulting in more energy efficiency.

Point-of-use tankless water heaters

Tankless water heaters are seen as green products these days, but you have to be careful about opting for tankless.  Due to the capacity limitations and temperature rise limitations on tankless heaters, they generally best used as point of use water heaters. In other words they would be located at the fixture or fixtures where the hot water is to be used.

Point of use water heaters eliminate that long pipe run, virtually eliminating the energy and water wastage attributable to the distribution piping.

Hot water demand systems

If point-of-use water heating is not feasible with your plumbing layout, then consider a hot water demand pumping system. A hot water demand system is a pumping system similar to a standard hot water circulating system, except the pump only comes on when you demand hot water by pressing a button.

Pressing the button causes a small pump mounted under the fixture furthest from the water heater to begin pumping the hot water from the water heater to the fixture at high speed, turning off when it detects the arrival of hot water.

Then when you turn on the fixture you have instant hot water and no water was run down the drain. Demand systems only consume about $1 to $2 per year in electricity to run. Some models are under $200 retail, and are very easy to install, they hook up with hoses. They save you time, water, and money.

Plumbing products and a green plumbing layouts

Make your plumbing system green, add insulation if possible, and use plumbing products like point-of-use water heaters, and use a hot water demand systems if you can’t use a point of use tankless water heater.

If you have long pipe runs, loop your hot water piping from fixture to fixture and install a demand system at the end of the line.
