The Pantry Inc. Goes Green with the Implementation of New Energy Efficient Data Center designed by Altruent Systems

Raleigh, N.C. (October 15, 2008)– – Altruent Systems, a systems integration company headquartered in Raleigh, N.C. that specializes in the consulting, design, and installation of mission-critical infrastructure, announced today, that the firm has completed a new energy efficient data center for Sanford-based The Pantry Inc., (NASDAQ:PTRY). Altruent Systems was selected to design, engineer and construct The Pantry’s new data center with state-of-the-art infrastructure that allows for energy savings on power and cooling.

With rising energy costs now becoming a major concern for most large organizations, the interest in reducing data center and IT energy, where the majority of a company’s utility costs are incurred, is now becoming a necessity. “Green” organizations, such as LEED and Green Grid, are stirring interest within C- level executives to turn their companies into eco-friendly, energy efficient consumers and producers.

When The Pantry decided that it was time to expand their headquarters’ data center, Ed Collupy, VP of Information Technology commented, “we saw an opportunity to take advantage of new power and cooling technologies, which were environmentally friendly yet more productive.”

The Pantry had already begun taking advantage of new computing technologies such as blade servers, whereas one server chassis consists of multiple circuit boards, or ‘blades’, that each act as an individual server. This allows more computing power in a smaller space, which drastically reduces power consumption, but results in highly concentrated, or ‘high density’ heat output. The ability to capture and remove this concentrated heat, in order to maintain an optimal temperature requires a new approach to data center design. With this in mind, The Pantry chose Altruent Systems for their proficiency in high-density data center design using APC’s (American Power Conversion) scalable InfraStruXure® architecture.

Altruent’s design and construction of The Pantry’s data center allowed The Pantry to make a significant contribution to Energy and Atmosphere conservation and preservation. This is done by using multiple InRow, ‘close-coupled’ cooling units, which eliminates the need for an inefficient raised floor, and places the cooling units closer to the servers. This captures the heat directly from an intentional ‘hot aisle’ and distributes cool air to the ‘cold aisle’. This prevents the hot and cold air from mixing, which highly improves cooling efficiency, and thus reduces the total energy required to maintain the proper temperature. With the implementation of such a system, The Pantry was able to greatly increase their computing capacity and reliability, while simultaneously going Green!

“Working together with Altruent, we successfully transformed an outdated data center into one that will carry us forward for many years to come,” said Collupy. “These initiatives have positioned The Pantry for continued technology growth along with an outlook towards smart energy-related controls.”

While more and more companies such as The Pantry are looking towards a “Greener” future, it’s no wonder why companies like Altruent Systems are being selected to reconfigure, design and provide solutions to outdated data centers. With energy costs rising and many companies trying to incorporate a green ideology within their business model, it makes sense to start going green at the core of your business, where most energy is consumed — the data center.

Brad Thompson, Project Engineer for Altruent Systems said, “Technology is constantly evolving, and our job is to stay on top of state-of-the-art innovations from the industry leading professionals, in order to provide our customers with the best possible solutions available.”

“Going Green” means learning techniques and engaging in practices that translate into more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible results. Going Green helps protect the environment and maintains its natural resources for current and future generations. Many people would agree that caring for the environment is our responsibility as consumers of it. When it comes to owning a backyard swimming pool, it is very possible to to reduce the amount of energy lost so that we can be environmentally responsible while, at the same time, enjoying the luxury of swimming and entertaining at home.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, backyard swimming pools lose energy in a number of ways, but evaporation is the most significant source of energy loss. In fact, 70% of energy loss in swimming pools can be attributed to evaporation. Evaporating water requires tremendous amounts of energy. It only takes 1 BTU (British Thermal Unit) to increase the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree, but each pound of 80ºF water that evaporates takes an enormous 1,048 BTUs of heat out of the pool.

The evaporation rate from a backyard pool depends on the pool’s temperature, on air temperature and humidity, and on the wind speed at the pool’s surface. The higher the temperature of the pool, the higher the wind speed, and the lower the humidity, the greater the rate of evaporation. If you live in a windy area, you should install a wind barrier like strategically planted trees, or a tall fence, evaporation. The windbreak should be high enough and near enough to the pool so that it doesn’t create turbulence over the pool, which will increase evaporation. You also don’t want the windbreak to block the sun from the pool; the sun helps to heat the pool and keeps it warm over time.

Creating an environmentally friendly swimming pool is achievable, important and simple to do. First, use Solar Covers, also known as solar blankets, to cover your pool. Solar Pool Covers or Blankets resemble enormous sheets of bubble wrap. The bubbles trap heat from the sun and convey the heat to the pool, keeping the water temperature warm and comfortable. The solar cover also helps to trap the water’s heat and prevents heat loss in the cooler air at night or on cooler days. Solar covers float freely on top of a pool without the need for tie-downs or anchors to secure them. Solar covers are usually folded and stored or rolled up in a large roll and wheeled out of the way. Solar Blankets are perfect for use in sunny climates because the more heat they can trap, the longer they can extend the swim season. Solar pool covers can increase water temperatures by as much as 10-15 degrees.

Besides offering energy savings, pool covers also do the following:

Save water by decreasing the amount of make-up water needed by 30%–50%;  Reduce the pool’s consumption of chemicals by 35%–60%;  Reduce cleaning time by preventing dirt and other debris from entering the pool.

A second way to create an energy efficient pool is to use a Solar Pool Heater. Solar heaters provide another way of taking advantage of the sun’s free energy. Solar Heaters provide an economical, durable, efficient solution. When combined with a solar pool cover, a Solar Pool Heater extends the swimming season significantly well into the cooler months.

Most solar pool heating systems include the following elements:

A solar collector — pool water is circulated through this device so that it can be heated by the sun;  A filter — debris is removed in the filter before water is pumped through the collector;  A pump — pool water is circulated through the filter and collector and back to the pool thanks to the pump;  A flow control valve — pool water is diverted through the solar collector through this automatic or manual device.

A third way to save energy is to use a Pool Filter Timer. Automating a pool’s filter operation pays for itself in energy savings within the first couple of months. Except during times of heavy use, most swimming pools only need to filter 12 hours per day. Pool Filter Timers can save you money on electricity and chemicals. Most Pool Filter Timers efficient, durable and weather resistant, and have as many as 50 settings to provide the pool owner with complete control and many options.

The fourth way to “go green” with your pool is is is to use a Pool Pump. You can conserve energy and sustain a comfortable swimming pool temperature by using a smaller, higher efficiency pump and by operating it less frequently. In a study of 120 pools by the Center for Energy Conservation at Florida Atlantic University, some pool owners saved as much as 75% of their original pumping bill when they used these energy conservation measures.

In summary, there are numerous options and ways to “Go Green” while we still enjoy relaxing by the pool with family and friends. Being environmentally friendly doesn’t mean giving up our beloved pools, it just means taking a little more time to do our part to make them even better for our environment and for those around us.

Years ago, in the days when buying a home was easier, and there were less legal forms required in a real estate transactions, homes were inadequately insulated. There just was not the knowledge or inclination to insulate homes the way the energy conscious world of today does. The older homes, and in many communities these are the ranch style homes of the 40′s and 50′s, windows are still the old single pane glass screens, with no insulation. Then, later on, in the 80′s builders left building those energy guzzling openings, and built with double pain window insulation systems. This kept in air, and kept out out. It also kept out noise as well.

Most every builder today builds thinking about energy-efficiency, and the window is important in an energy-efficiency system. Heat loss occurs mostly from the room, windows, and air leaks around window frames, and doors, and door entrances. The lower lying horizontal dwellings with energy-efficient features will be the best conservor of energy, and lest costly to heat and cool.

A Florida Realtor advises his buyers, and potential buyers, to get an energy audit done on a home, if the seller had not done that and does not have any records supporting that. Home buyers are always advised by real estate agents everywhere to get a general home inspection, and there is a legal form to be signed, or filled out stating that buyer authorized a home inspection, or denied it, but this Realtor goes a step further, while many Realtors will not push an energy audit on their buyers. The Energy Star program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is a good benchmark for what is an energy efficient product in the home, or what is an rated Energy Star home. This program is for both homes and businesses. This program can save home owners and businesses a big part of the energy bill.

Consumers can look for appliances with an Energy Star rating. This agent went around helping buyers locate and pick out Energy Star products and homes knowing with high standards, the buyer would be satisfied, and would find an economical way of meeting the monthly energy bill.

Making Home Energy Efficient

(ArticlesBase SC #1823626)

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Making Home Energy Efficient

If you have not already done so this year, it is a good ideal to check your home for air leaks and drafts. Air can get into your home from places like doors, windows, vents, chimneys, baseboards and other places in your home that you may not be aware of. An air leak or draft can come in from any type of small crack or opening. And sometimes you don’t know about this unless you check around your home. When you find out where the drafts are coming from in your home, you should seal up these places to keep the cold air from getting into your home and make you home more energy efficient.

If you go around your home on a windy day you can generally find out where your air leaks are coming in from. They could be coming in from different areas around your home. Your windows can let drafts into your home. The way to stop this from happening is to seal around your windows with silicone caulking. Silicone caulking will fill in any of the cracks around your windows where air is coming in. You can also use foam stripping around your windows to seal up air leaks. Some people put plastic over their windows each year to keep the cold air from getting in around their windows. Making your home more energy efficient is a good way to save money on your energy bill each month.

The doors in your home are also a place that you will want to check for drafts coming into your home. You can purchase certain items to help seal around your doors like weather stripping. You can get various types of weather stripping for your doors. The weather stripping is placed around your doors, sealing your doors tighter when they are closed. This will keep cold air from coming in around your doors and can make your home more energy efficient. There are many ways we can make our homes more energy efficient. The first step is checking around your home for cold air and drafts, and finding out where they are coming from. Then sealing them up so that your home is more comfortable to live in.

By Diana Kaganovsky

Traditional incandescent and fluorescent bulbs continue to embrace obsolescence as we make advances in technology. Consumers are looking to fill their homes with energy and money-saving alternatives. Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) are smaller versions of full-sized fluorescents, but yield the same light as incandescent bulbs. Light Emitting Diode (LED) are not only extremely energy-efficient, but their use has evolved from single-bulb use to being able to fit into any household light fixture, which is achieved by grouping the small bulbs together. There are an abundance of advantages to using both LEDs and CFLs over conventional light bulbs. Below are a few reasons why choosing LEDs and CFLs prove to be beneficial:

Both CFLs and LEDs come in different, sizes, shapes, and styles to accommodate those interested in convenience ease of replacement, light quality and desired wattage, variety and, obviously it needs to complement the home décor.
LED Bulbs outlive both CFLs and typical incandescents, making them the most energy-efficient. Energy savings, extension of battery life and fewer replacements make this option the most financially profitable and cost-effective.
LEDs and CFLs are more expensive than incandescent however; money is being saved overall due to their extended lifecycle and energy-efficiency. Research is in progress to replace the expensive sapphire-based technology of LEDs with cheap silicon wafers to combat the high cost of producing LEDs.
CFLs and LEDs are more advanced because of their ability to convert more of the energy as light as oppose to heat. Thus energy is conserved and unnecessary heat is avoided.
CFLs use rare phosphors which provide a warm, placid lighting and color instead of the standard light we’re all used to seeing in fluorescents.
Water and air pollution is reduced due to energy saving by lowering CO2 emissions, high-level nuclear waste and sulfur oxide.
The versatility of both CFLs and LEDs mentioned above is equal to that of incandescent bulbs.
New and improved light bulb designs are still be created. For instance, there soon may be a new kind of bulb called Electron Stimulated Luminescence (ESL), which would still outlast incandescents, while producing less heat, as well as not contain any mercury (a slight drawback of CFLs), making disposal less hazardous.

Deciding between CFL and LED bulbs depends on what your goals are. To be the most energy-efficient go with LED, but to keep the illumination to a maximum while still saving energy and money over time, the choice is CFL. Whichever light bulb you choose, know that you will not only be saving money over time, but helping the environment as well which is truly the main objective.

Energy Efficient Windows

If the windows in your home have seen better days, replacing them can bring you many advantages. In fact, buying replacement windows for your home is one of the most cost-effective home improvements you can make. Unlike many home improvement projects, replacing your old windows with newer, more energy efficient ones, can actually save you money. Best of all, those savings can accumulate over time, and the energy savings alone can more than pay for the costs of the windows.

Just consider the top 10 benefits of replacing your old windows with newer and more energy efficient models.

Lower energy costs – replacing your old leaky windows with newer and more energy efficient ones can result in significant energy savings, both now and in the future. No one expects the cost of energy to go down, so the cost savings you are able to achieve with new replacement windows will only become more valuable as time goes by.

Fewer maintenance hassles – constantly painting, repairing and maintaining old windows can be a real hassle, and in some cases it can be downright dangerous. If you are tired of climbing a ladder to paint and clean your windows, consider how replacement windows can reduce your maintenance hassles.

Greater resale value – unlike many other home improvements, installing new windows can actually increase the value of your home. The age of the windows is a major concern with home buyers, so replacing your old windows can help your home sell faster as well. Beautify your home – your home is your prized possession, and it is important to keep your biggest investment looking its best. replacement windows can add charm, beauty and sophistication to your home.

Easier cleaning – cleaning traditional windows often means climbing a ladder and scrubbing for what seems like an eternity. New windows, on the other hand, tilt in for easy cleaning, allowing you to keep your windows clean without ever leaving your home.

Tax advantages – the Federal government provides significant tax savings for homeowners who replace their old inefficient windows with more energy efficient models. Your state government might provide similar savings, meaning that you can recoup a significant portion of the up front cost when you file your tax return.

More light – being cooped up in a dank and dark home is no fun, but replacement windows can bring more light into your life. New window designs allow more light into your home without leaking hot or cool air or wasting energy.

Unique designs – if you own an older home, chances are all the windows look pretty much alike. You can fight back against this cookie cutter design with unique replacement windows, including bows, bays and picture windows that will make your home look like a showplace.

Better security – replacement windows often have much better security features than traditional windows, providing a deterrent to criminals and helping to keep our family safe at home.

Greater privacy – installing frosted or tinted replacement windows means you can see out but others cannot easily look in. This can provide greater privacy, safety and security for your home and your family.

If you have been looking for a low cost way to beautify your home, protect your family and achieve real cost savings, installing replacement windows may be just what you have been looking for. Replacing your old and inefficient windows with new energy efficient ones can save you a great deal of money, while at the same time making your home more livable, more secure and of course much more inviting.

Investing in Energy Efficient Appliances

Why buy efficient appliances? Most households are well aware of the rising costs of energy, both financial and environmental; one way that we can combat both of these costs is by using energy efficient appliances.

Choosing energy efficient appliances is a straight-forward endeavor thanks to government regulations requiring labeling to show energy usage and costs. In the US this is the EnergyGuide label and in Canada EnerGuide label; both of these labels will give you basically the same information. The labels show you the kilowatt/hour usage per year as well as how that particular appliance rates against other similar appliances on the market. This information allows you to compare appliances so you can make an informed decision when making your purchase.

The other designation to look for when buying appliances is the international Energy Star mark. This symbol is used to show that the item meets the highest standards of energy efficiency available on the market. Energy Star products will be the most energy efficient appliances but may cost more than their less efficient counterparts; be sure to take into account the reduced cost of operation.

In many places there are incentives for upgrading your appliances to Energy Star models. Some areas have government loans with low interest, tax breaks, or buy-back programs for old appliances. Some areas have tax credits primarily for upgrading in existing homes though some incentives are aimed primarily at new construction. Check out your government and power company’s websites for details on what is available to you.

Remember that sometimes the newer, more efficient models can be more costly than other appliances. Take the time to figure in the difference in cost of operation as well as any offset you can get with tax credits or rebates on a more efficient version.

DIY energy efficient home tips

It is best to use the services of professionals to plan and make yours an  energy efficient home. However you can get started on improving the energy efficiency by yourself. There are many ways by which you can reduce the amount of energy used in your home.

For example exhaust fans during winter also throw out warm air. Therefore if they are required to be used to remove air from the bathroom or the kitchen they should be used sparingly. Otherwise in as little as an hour they can throw out a huge quantity of warm air.

Another simple to implement method of saving energy is to use CFL ( Compact fluorescent lights ), these consume far less energy for generating the same amount of light. Incandescent bulbs also do not last as long as  CFL and therefore though a CFL costs more than an incandescent bulb in the long run it makes better sense to use a CFL. You will benefit from a reduced electricity bill for the rest of your life.

A regularly serviced furnace also helps save energy.Energy efficient homes have furnaces that are serviced in time and the filters replaced as and when required. Clean filters will perform more efficiently then unclean ones. Pleated filters though more expensive perform better and therefore are a better option.

Another easy to implement improvement is a thermostat that can be programmed. You do not need a very warm house when there is no one at home. With a programmable thermostat you can maintain an optimal temperature that saves you money without lowering comfort levels.

Finally you should also spend some time looking for air leaks in doors and windows. The small leaks all over the house add up and you can be wasting a lot of energy. You can devise simple methods to plug the leaks and when a more comprehensive upgrade is done you can look to have doors and windows that do not have leaks at all.

A little effort will go a long way in improving the energy efficiency of your home. It will make you and your family sensitive to the importance of conserving energy as well. You can learn more at www.advancedhomeenergy.com.
