How to Build Wind Generator – Help Save Energy

If I had to pick any of the renewable energy methods when starting out again I would start out with building a wind generator. If you were to compare the cost of building solar panels to the cost of building a wind generator you would see that the wind generator options costs about 20% of the solar panel option. To cost to build solar panels that will produce 1000 watts would be around $900 while the cost of a wind generator is only $150 – $200.

That being said, you will need to live in an area where you get at least 12MPH winds in order to run your wind generator though. For most people it shouldn’t be a problem; however, there are some places where the wind simply doesn’t blow very much.

A wind generator is made up of three “main parts”: the motor, the blades and tail, and the tower. The tower can be found for free. Simply drive around your neighborhood looking for somebody who has a satellite dish and a television tower. Ask them if you can have their TV tower. In most cases they’ll say yes and in some cases they’ll give you money to tote it away (we got $50 when we removed our friends tower).

The motor is fairly easy to find. Simply log on to eBay and do a search for ametek motors. They’re not always listed, but you should be able to find one if you keep searching. You’ll want one that produces 24 – 48 volts at around 400 – 600 RPM’s.

The blades and tail are also very easy to find. Go to a construction site and see if they have any left over 6 or 8 inch blue sewer pipe. You’ll only need a piece that’s 6 feet long or so, and many times they’ll give it to you for free. The tail is made out of a piece of steel rod and a triangular cut piece of plastic. You can find these items at your local hardware store. Make sure to pick up some UV paint to paint the blades and tail piece with. Being constantly exposed to the sun can make the blades brittle and the UV paint protects against that.

You will need some other nuts and bolts from the hardware store as well as a flange so that you can mount the wind generator on the TV tower. TV towers are great because they have a nice 2 ince hole in the top which makes mounting a cinch.

Like I always say “if we can do it, than anyone can”. If you can handle a jig saw and follow instructions then you’ll have no problem building a wind generator.

How Can Wind Power Generators and Solar Help You

Uses of self made power
Wind Power Generators and solar technology offers a way to produce an endless fountain of electricity for the home or for any other uses around the house like to power a work shop area or perhaps to run pool equipment, or saunas, whirlpools, central heat and air, washers and dryers, hot water heaters. Athough units can be built to supply entire homes with electricity the home owner can be very versatile with design in size, capacities, and whether they would like the electricity to just operate certain pieces of home equipment and appliances or if they would prefer to have enough of a supply to run the entire home.

Use conventional electricity to run smaller appliances:
You may just want to build a system that would supply electricity to all of the units in your home that run on 220 and stay hooked up to the grid and use smaller amounts of electrical power from the electric company to run things like televisions, toasters, refridgerators, lights etc. Just this would still probably easily cut a power bill in half.  Lots of people are hopping aboard as they find out how wind power generators and  solar kits can be very valuable home improvement additions. Many come to realize that not only could it save them large amounts  of money in one respect  but also that the added benefits of increased property value made it a worth while improvement as well as being eco-logically beneficial too!

Clean energy resource
Not only is wind power generators up and coming for their versatility, cost effectiveness, and ease of installation but they address the present global warming issues (environmental) in a very big way, that being that the technology uses the wind and the sun which are both excellent renewable energy resources that dosen’t harm the environment in any way. The mining of Fossil fuels, coal, oil and natural gas, are all non-renewable sources of energy and are not only being drastically depleted but are heavily dependent upon in our society to produce electricity by being burnt which harms our atmosphere with the by product that is let over.

For those who don’t understand how the wind power generator and solar system works, a wind turbine or windmill is constructed which harnesses the wind and turns a generator, mounted in the prop area of the windmill, a car generator, which produces electricity that travels through a stator that in turn runs down through wires that take it to various other pieces of equipment that is incorporated in the system to register and transform the energy both coming in and going out to be stored and or be used in desired increments of various watts or volts. The solar part of the system comes into play moreso when the wind dies down and their isn’t sufficient wind to turn the propeller. The solar panels, which are strategically placed, catch the sunlight through special cells and store energy (electricity) that way.

Homemade Wind Generator – How To Cut Costs With The Help Of A Plan

A homemade wind generator is the ideal solution for anyone living in windy or overcast areas where solar power may be insufficient or inefficient to rely on. Before deciding whether to have a go at a DIY wind turbine construction at all, it should be wise to have a wind resource assessment done to estimate the energy final output for the project and decide whether it is feasible or not. To do so, a prospective DIY windmill builder should make use of GIS (Geographic Information System) from public data, such as the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory High Resolution Wind Data Set, for example.

Once decided that this is the way to go, it is relatively an easy task to build a wind generator, providing good guidance is available. The costs involved are a fraction of a ready made windmill, down to few $hundreds from $thousands. The real obstacle may be technical, especially without manual or technical experience in such devices. Main parts like the blades, the Dc motor and the mast can easily be found at a hardware store, while batteries to store the converted energy may be recycled from old forklift trucks and pulsed back to life with a homemade de-sulfator.

When talking of domestic windmill generators we always assume they are horizontal axis turbines, as this is by far the most common wind generator design, not just for domestic use but for wind farms as well. Horizontal axis means that the generator spins on such axis with the blades perpendicular, thus the whole structure needs mounting on a mast. The higher the mast, the faster the wind, so in theory it would be ideal to build a tall must, in practice this is not feasible for homemade wind generators, as a twice as high mast would require 8 times more materials to make, be 8 times heavier and require a team to lift it. Not a cheap solution for a DIY project meant to save money.

A better idea is the constructions of multiple smaller units, should one be insufficient for the household energy expenditure. Small homemade wind generators of say, 1000 or 3000 watt, also require a less complicated technology to keep the blades in optimal position to changing wind direction or gust strength. Large wind farm power turbines need complex hydraulics to regulate the pitch and the furling, some have a motor for each blade to adjust the blades to different conditions, but for a small homemade unit this is no problem,

A standard wind turbine set up consists of 3 blades because this is considered the most efficient design for a windmill, both for small and large ones. 4 or more blades become increasingly thinner and expensive to build with only a minimal fraction of gain in efficiency, while 2 blades are probably a little cheaper to build, but less efficient in converting energy from kinetic into mechanical, hence energy produced, causing a worse return on the initial investment.

Over all a homemade wind generator should cost $150 to $250 to build, providing thorough instructions are available. If you plan to build a homemade wind generator, check out this website. It is specific to DIY windmill gewind powerans only, not solar panel AND windmill plans. By targeting only wind power, it can cut down costs not just on ready made windmills, but also on information that may be not relevant to your needs right now. Click on homemade wind generator now.
