Exercising Energy Efficiency by Making use of Renewable Energy Resources

Get *the* Best Wind & Solar Pak, ever, Easy Earth Energy.... Let me know how you like it!

A majority of you must have seen the phrase Renewable energy in your environmental science textbooks as well as nature-based magazines. This type of energy resource is derived from organic products therefore; it is biodegradable and never-ending in nature. Sun, water, blowing wind, biological ingredients and geothermal forces are employed for the creation of this form of energy. In comparison to other conventional types of energies like fossil fuels and petrol, natural energy sources are advantageous, eco-friendly and pollution-free therefore; a large number of people are going for these alternate sources of energy.

Renewable energy is helpful for the unemployed youngsters in terms of offering job opportunities. This is simply because various corporate bodies initiate ventures that support eco-friendly causes and they focus on energy efficiency. If these alternate energy sources are correctly harnessed, numerous countries will get an opportunity to improve their gross annual budget by reducing the expenses of oil and coal import-export. Besides, we can make this world a safe, pollution-free as well as unique place to live in, for our future generations. Instead of wasting cash on purchasing non-recyclable energy resources, executive bodies should concentrate on using these alternate resources!

After all that complicated promotion of green movement, the existing population has become aware of the phrase energy efficiency. Several large organizations even exercise appropriate plans to trim down unnecessary energy consumption. Instead of altering the lighting systems totally, individuals have started utilizing fluorescent bulbs in place of incandescent bulbs, in their offices. Even if you do not have enough funds to use alternate energy like photo voltaic cells, solar water heater etc. you may always turn off unnecessary lighting to save your power consumption.

To discover if the establishment is getting benefits by employing these systems, an energy efficiency consultant department has been set up to carry out audits and research in different localities. They’ve professionals that detect problematic places and find out the average power intake per square foot. If the total consumption is more than the normal value, an immediate action is taken and energy saving retrofit is mounted inside the buildings.

Apart from clipping electricity bills and utilizing renewable energy resources, several agencies utilize exclusively designed vehicles that lower carbon emissions. This further leads to economical advantages in the form of tradable emissions credits. In case you wish to acquire more information regarding this topic, you may consult an experienced environmentalist or, take a look at the online blogs, weekly newsletters and nature periodicals published in your area. Go green this year!

If you have not already done so this year, it is a good ideal to check your home for air leaks and drafts. Air can get into your home from places like doors, windows, vents, chimneys, baseboards and other places in your home that you may not be aware of. An air leak or draft can come in from any type of small crack or opening. And sometimes you don’t know about this unless you check around your home. When you find out where the drafts are coming from in your home, you should seal up these places to keep the cold air from getting into your home and make you home more energy efficient.

If you go around your home on a windy day you can generally find out where your air leaks are coming in from. They could be coming in from different areas around your home. Your windows can let drafts into your home. The way to stop this from happening is to seal around your windows with silicone caulking. Silicone caulking will fill in any of the cracks around your windows where air is coming in. You can also use foam stripping around your windows to seal up air leaks. Some people put plastic over their windows each year to keep the cold air from getting in around their windows. Making your home more energy efficient is a good way to save money on your energy bill each month.

The doors in your home are also a place that you will want to check for drafts coming into your home. You can purchase certain items to help seal around your doors like weather stripping. You can get various types of weather stripping for your doors. The weather stripping is placed around your doors, sealing your doors tighter when they are closed. This will keep cold air from coming in around your doors and can make your home more energy efficient. There are many ways we can make our homes more energy efficient. The first step is checking around your home for cold air and drafts, and finding out where they are coming from. Then sealing them up so that your home is more comfortable to live in.

Making Wind Power For Your Home!

Renewable energy is critical for a clean and green future. Global demand for power has already exceeded supply. Governments and individuals are realizing that they need to  take steps to save power as well as encourage the use of renewable energy sources.

Oil, natural gas and coal produced from fossil fuels are gradually running out and their production has unleashed devastating effects on the environment that’ll take years to correct. And correct it we must for the sake of our children and grandchildren… In this scenario, harnessing the power of wind is a viable and efficient solution that can either replace or supplement traditional energy solutions in our homes.

Wind power is a gentle but effective way of cutting electricity bills, dealing with power outages while addressing urgent environmental concerns. Non-polluting wind power systems can easily be installed in your backyard or on your rooftop. The benefits of generating electricity using the wind are numerous:
Free of cost
Doesn’t emit any harmful pollutants such as carbon dioxide
Plenty in supply
Reduces your electricity bills as well as your carbon footprint
After paying for the installation you’ll recover the amount you spent by saving on electricity
Complements a solar power system by capturing the wind in winter when sunlight is less
Store excess electricity in batteries that can be put into use when there’s no wind

It’s quite simple to generate your own electricity at home by using small windmills or turbines. They’re not difficult to install, neither are they expensive. What these turbines do is they use blades to catch the wind, so whenever the wind blows, these blades move and drive the turbine.

This leads to the production of electricity. As you can imagine, the stronger the wind, the more electricity! These small windmills are capable of generating enough electricity to power your lights and electrical appliances at home.

Using wind power can save you thousands of dollars a year on electricity bills. Plus, you have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve done something for the environment!

If you want to save money on your electric bill then you need to find out more at:

3 Things Not To Do When Making Your Own Wind Turbine

These are the top 3 things not to do when making your own wind turbine. Following these basic suggestions will save you a lot of headache when making your own wind turbine and inevitably lead to the success of your project. So here they are:

Tip No1: Don’t start building your wind turbine before you have investigated the wind conditions in your area

This might be an obvious point, but you would be surprised at how many people start building their wind turbine, install it and are then surprised that there is not enough wind to power it. So what can you do to prevent such a mistake?

Well before you start investing in time and money to make your own wind turbine you should measure the wind current strength in your area. On average, you would need at least 10mph wind speed so that your wind power installation would be profitable in the long run. If the wind speed is below this minimum, then you should definitely reconsider your project.

Tip No2: Don’t make your own wind turbine if you want to cover your whole electricity consumption

This is a tricky point, but here is the logic behind it. A DIY wind turbine is a pretty good option and is not really inferior to a prefabricated one. Except for in the area of aerodynamics. Is that really so important?

Well, if you are just looking to cover a part of your electricity bill expenses, then a home-made not so aerodynamic wind turbine would do just fine. However, in case you are looking to make all of your electricity through wind power, then you would need the proper wind turbine with maximally effective aerodynamics. For that purpose, the best option is the prefabricated wind power installations.

Tip No3: Don’t just assume that you can build your own wind turbine without expert guidance

This last tip is not meant to discourage you in your endeavor to make a wind turbine. On the other hand, it is meant to encourage you and reassure you that with the proper guidance you can make a pretty good wind power installation. This wind turbine might not be sufficient to cover all of your electricity needs, but it would be a nice supplement to your conventional power supply.

So is this really a Do It Yourself project since you would need to make a further investment for expert guidance? Well, you do not really need to invite a specialist to help you. All you need is a ste-by-step DIY guide. And these guides are not that expensive – you can get one for less than $50. Moreover, you are doing this project to save money, right? A good guide can help you save more and faster and will thus repay for itself faster than you would hope for.

These were my three don’ts that everyone who is thinking of making their own wind turbine should be aware of. Again, you need to investigate the natural conditions, examine whether a home-made wind turbine is good enough for your needs, and finally get expert guidance to be able to do your project more efficiently. Beware of these don’ts and you should be able to do just fine in this DIY project of yours and start making your own electricity pretty soon. And by all means, check out the expert guidance, which is offered at the link below.

White House ID’s Barriers To Making Homes Energy Effecient

Text by Terrell McSweeny, Domestic Policy Adviser to the Vice President. Vice President Biden and the Middle Class Task Force just finished unveiling the Recovery Through Retrofit Report, at a public event inside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Joining the Vice President at the announcement were Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy, Hilda Solis, Secretary of Labor, Shaun Donovan, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Karen Mills, Administrator of the Small Business Administration. Last May in Denver, CO the Vice President asked the White House Council of Environmental Quality (CEQ) to report back to the Middle Class Task Force with a plan to make sure that the unprecedented Recovery Act investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy lay the groundwork for a self-sustaining home energy efficiency retrofit industry — which will create good, green jobs and save middle class families money on their energy bills. CEQ answered this call by bringing together eleven Departments and Agencies and six White House offices to develop todays report. The report identifies three barriers that have prevented a national market for home retrofits from taking off. First, consumers dont have access to reliable information about retrofits. Second, the upfront costs of home retrofits can be high but consumers dont have access to financing. Finally, there arent enough skilled workers to serve a robust

Save Money by Making your Home Energy Efficient

There is another big plus to being energy efficient: You help the environment. Using less energy means less air pollution from power plants that burn oil, coal or natural gas. Pollution from these sources can cause respiratory disease, smog and acid rain and contribute to global climate change.

Consumer Federation of America offers these tips on how to be environmentally friendly and save energy in your home.

* Clean or replace the air filters in your home’s heating and cooling system regularly. A dirty air filter can increase your energy costs and lead to equipment failure. It’s also good to have your systems checked once a year by a licensed professional. Regular maintenance can detect problems early.

* Use light bulbs and fixtures that have earned the Energy Star label – the government’s symbol for energy efficiency. Such lighting uses two-thirds less energy and can last up to 10 times longer.

* Install a programmable thermostat. It will automatically adjust the temperature to meet your comfort needs efficiently during different times of the day or week. A programmable thermostat can save you up to $100 a year when properly programmed and used.

* Seal air leaks in your home. Add new weather-stripping and caulking around windows and doors. Caulk and weatherproof all exterior openings for plumbing and electrical service, and look for other openings that need to be sealed, such as attic vents and ducts.

Effective air sealing, combined with the right amount of insulation, can save up to 10 percent on energy bills. And if you’re in the market for new windows, look for energy-efficient ones to help keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

* When replacing older, inefficient appliances in your home, look for new ones that have earned the Energy Star label. They meet strict energy-efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy; use less energy; help prevent air pollution; and reduce energy costs in your home.

Energy Audits: Priceless Information Making Your Home Energy Efficient

A home energy audit is the first way to realize how much energy your home consumes and then decide on the measures you will have to take to make your home more energy efficient. An energy audit will show you problems which, if they are corrected, will end up saving a lot of your money afterwards.

Home energy audits will also indicate if there are problems with your heating and cooling systems or where your house loses energy. You can also learn some ways to conserve hot water and energy. You can do this audit on your own or you can have a professional do it for you.

You can conduct a home energy audit by yourself very easily. Simply start walking around the house and try spotting the problems. You should also keep a check list with areas you have already inspected and with the problems you have found in each of them. Prioritize your search and make it efficient.

Start by noting every air leak wherever they are obvious because fixing these drafts can save you up to 30% energy per year. If you fix this problem you also make your home more comfortable. Try checking for air leaks especially in places like this: window frames, baseboards, attic hatches, fireplace dampers, wall air conditioning, doors, electrical outlets or switch plates. Look for gaps around your pipes and wires and check every isolation to see if it is applied properly.

Check the windows and doors for leaks and here is a hint: if you are able to see day light around a door or window frame that means that they surely leak. You can try getting rid of these leaks by weather stripping them but you also may consider changing your doors and windows with new ones.

Inspect the heating and the cooling equipment as it was recommended by the person who installed them or by the manufacturer or at least once a year. Check the filters and replace them as needed. Generally, you should change them about once every month or two, especially during periods of high usage. Have a professional check and clean your equipment once a year. If anything is over 15 years old you should consider changing it entirely. The new energy efficient models will help you save energy and are also ecological. You should change them especially if your system is in poor condition. Check your ductwork for dirt streaks, especially near seams. These indicate air leaks, and they should be sealed with a duct mastic. You should also insulate any ducts or pipes that reach through unheated spaces. An insulation R-Value of 6 is the recommended minimum.

Last but certainly not least, you should examine the lighting. The energy from lighting can be about 10% of your electric bill monthly. Examine the wattage size of the light bulbs in your house. You may have 100-watt (or larger) bulbs where 60 or 75 watts would do. You should maybe consider compact fluorescent lamps for rooms in the house where lights stay on for longer periods of time. You will find all sorts of energy efficient lamps in any store and they are available in many designs.

So home energy audits can be easily performed by yourself but if you want it to be perfectly done and make them really count you should ask a professional.
