Advantages and Disadvantages of Wind Energy

by David Neich

This article will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy. Some of these might seem apparent already but we will delve into it throughout the article.

Once wind turbines are setup they do create very good efficiency for power but it’s the setting up of the turbines that makes the process questionable. In the long run there is no doubt that it’s a very good equation but getting their can be a bit tricky. Let’s break it down in a way that explains the process very clearly.

1. Disadvantages of Wind Energy.

The main one that comes to mind is the sheer cost of building the turbines. Based on that we are talking about major power generation and the cost of building the turbines including the concrete, the steel and all the foundation work needed to construct them. There is also the land that needs to be cleared to allow them to be built, this is really the main disadvantage of wind energy.

With the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy being discussed so much it’s the issue of carrying the power back to the grid therefore you need power lines and transformers to do this, so of course they have to be constructed in the first place. Also all the materials that is needed to have this completed is very resource intensive anyway, but over time it certainly works out better than the current situation. Why not build a solar water heaterand save up to 65% on your energy consumption.

The issue of displacement of wildlife has to be brought into the equation as well. If there is basically no impact on this that’s exactly what we wanted, there will always be the issue of animals getting court in the turbine rotors and being killed but generally speaking that would be at a minimum. This is the price of progress in many ways unfortunately.

2. Advantages of Wind Energy.

The energy that is generated from wind power is very substantial and certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. Major wind turbines located off the mainland are approximately 50% more efficient than the ones that are on the mainland. This is mainly put down to sea breezes and with that with very little greenhouse gas emissions due to the conversion process.

Going back to the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy, it’s the cost of traditional energy compared to wind energy is where the the major advantage is, the main part is the outlay initially, some might say that it’s very expensive and I would challenge them to think compared to what. The ongoing costs of traditional energy or the long term prospects of renewable energy that once setup will never have to be paid for again.

An obvious part of wind energy generation is the ability to store that energy for use later, the wind doesn’t always blow so we certainly need to store it.

So far we have only discussed large scale wind generator’s or wind farm arrangements. Let’s have a brief look at how this can benefit you on a small scale basis for your home.

If you build a wind generator you can harness the wind energy to benefit you in several ways. The main one obviously is a financial saving which would equate to approximately $100 a month which can add up to be quite significant by the end of the year. The other factor is that you don’t have to rely on anyone but your self and that the energy being generated is totally free and that you did it.

Also knowing that if you have a blackout or some form of outage you have a backup. Having said this, the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy is will be discussed very much into the future, but if you have your own wind energy being generated by a wind generator there is disadvantage at all and there is nothing to worry about because you’re not needing to rely on the grid.

Home Made Wind Turbine – Follow These Simple Steps to Make a Wind Turbine

Yes, wind will make environmentally friendly electricity, but a home made wind turbine will not work everywhere. But if you have a steady enough wind speed you could make a wind turbine to generate enough electricity to lower you energy bills. Making a home wind turbine can be a fun weekend project that won’t take long to create, with the right plan and instructions that is.

Here is why you should build your very own home made wind turbine:

Here are the top two benefits to making a home made wind turbine; saving money on bills and help save the environment. But wait that is not all, below you will find the most important benefit to making your own wind turbine at home:

Building your own home made wind turbine has to a great benefit over ordering a wind power system. The real problem with doing this is that you will have to spend up to $1000 dollars and even up to $10,000 dollars probably even more too. By spending anywhere from $1000 to $10000 dollars it could take year before it actually pays for itself. So that is why you would want to create your own wind turbine, you will save a lot of money plus it will cost a fraction of purchasing a wind power unit.

Here are some basic steps that you could use to create a home made wind turbine system:

1. Take the propellers off the flower. With the propeller of, it will be used to spin the axle. Use a propeller from a larger pinwheel floor will work the best.

2. Put the spools between the plastic sheets and then glue them on. Then you have to place the small spools at the corners of the plastic sheet. Super glue will work the best here, once super glued let it dry. This will serve as the casing for the wind turbine generator.

3. be sure to measure the metal rod before you drill holes into the plastic. The hole that you drilled will be just for the metal rod. Be sure that the holes are perfectly aligned on both sides of the sheet. When you get the hole in perfectly aligned you can then place the metal rod through them.

4. Put the magnets in the casing. Here is something that is very important; you have to have enough room for them to rotate freely around the axle that is spinning the magnets, if you do not do this it will not work. Attach the magnets together with spacers. If you see that you don’t have enough room between the spacers to insert the axle, then the magnet will not work to generate electric current when the axle spins.

5. Then put the rod into the hole, after you have done that wrap wire around the generator. This is important part; wrap the wire around the casing about 225 to 300 times.

6. After you have done that, attach the propeller to the axle. Make sure that the propellers are large enough to catch the wind. Then you have to place the propeller on a metal rod, use super glue again to attach them together.

7. Remove the insulation from the wire. Then after you have done that, attach the lead to the end of a low voltage and amperage light bulb.

8. Once you have this finished, place the wind turbine that you just built in the breeze of the wind. You are doing this to see if it will provide enough power to light the bulb. But if there is not enough wind speed the make the wind turbine spin, and then just turn the propellers manually to see if it works.

By just following these simple steps you will be well on your way to making your very own wind turbine. By making your own wind turbine that will make power for you house and more. Go here to learn more about making

Homemade Wind Generator – Get start with these 5 Simple Steps!

You really need to be ready for a small, simple, large and sometimes complex challenge when wanting to construct a homemade wind generator. So many say its easy, but after completing a couple myself… They aren’t simple, but they are very rewarding. Get started by following these 5 simple steps!

Determine Wind Speed in your area to ensure you receive maximum results. This seems obvious, but there are many people who have set out to build a wind generator, only to complete their project and not produce near the amount of energy they imagined! Keep in mind, if wind speed is below 5 miles per hour building a homemade wind generator may not be the most economical choice. Do you have space? Wind generators require space for the tower and room for the blades. The ideal space would be free of trees and tall buildings. Keep in mind, wind generators vary in size. The space you will need will be determined on the scale of your project. To ensure you complete a homemade wind generator that works, you need to make sure you have an easy to follow set of plans. If not, you might just be taking a shot in the dark and end up with a pile of metal! Phew! We avoided a great catastrophe with tip number 3! Now that we have wind, space and plans we can move forward! Step #4 is really about making sure you have budgeted for your project. For many, a few hundred dollars is an investment. It will pay for itself in the long run, but please be realistic with the out of pocket expense. There are a few websites online (sites where you can bid on materials!) that always have great, high quality parts for low prices. Check them out, you will save yourself a pretty penny. What are you doing still reading this? Step #5 is about getting started! Oh yeah.. And please finish! Gotta love all the projects around my house that aren’t quite finished!

That’s all folks. 5 simple steps to help you build your homemade wind generator. I know, I didn’t quite walk you through step by step how to actually construct one, I have to leave that up to you. There are so many DIY homemade wind generator plans available that will help you.

Take the time to share this project with someone, if you have kids get them involved! This is our planet, and by deciding to create alternative energy you will be lending a helping hand in cleaning it up. Start making a change today, visit Home Made Wind Generator for a great DIY project!
