THIS IS A 4 FOOT 8 INCH INVERTED PROP CARVING FOR WEST COAST DOUG. IT WAS ORIGIONALY INTENDED BY ME TO ROTATE CLOCKWISE , BUT I WOUND UP MAKING IT ROTATE COUNTER CLOCKWISE. I LABELED THIS AS AN INVERTED PROP BECAUSE THE WORD PROP MEANS PROPELLER. THIS DOES NOT PROPELL , THIS ABSORBS OR EXTRACTS POWER FROM THE WIND. IN ALL REALITY, THE ANGLES ARE INVERSE OR INVERTED. TO BE POLITICALY CORRECT; ONE HAS TO CALL IT AN INTERTED OR INVERSE PROPELLER. THE WORD BLADES, OR SET OF BLADES WILL WORK JUST FINE IN CONTEXT. THIS IS JUST A TERM THAT I COINED TO SAVE MYSELF FROM USING A TERM THAT I HATE TO USE. ANYWAY NTHIS ONE IS CARVED OUT OF WHITE PINE. ONE MIGHT THINK THAT IT SHOULD BE CARVED OUT OF A HEAVIER WOOD LIKE OAK , BUT THE HEAVIER WOODS ARE TOO HEAVY FOR THE ROTATION SPEEDS. THE LIGHTER WOODS LIKE POPLAR , AND YELLOW PINE WORK JUST FINE. VEDAR IS A GOOD WOOD, IT IS EASY TO WORK WITH AND IT LASTS A REALY LONG TIME. SOME CEDAR BLADES HAVE BEEN IN SERVICE FOR OVER 70 YEARS WITH NO SIGNS OF WEAR OR DETERIATION. PLEASE ENJOY THE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES THAT I SHOW TILL YOU FIND ONE THAT MAKES IT SEEM POSSIBLE FOR YOUR SKILL TO ACCOMPLISH. IF YOU W2ANT TO MAKE WIND TURBINES I SUGGEST THAT YOU TRY TO CARVE AT LEAST ONE. IT WILL COME IN HANDY IN THE FUTURE. AND I THINK THAT A WOODEN PROP WILL GO MUCH FASTER THAN A PVC SET DUE TO THE SMOOTHER, MORE AERODYNAMIC DESIGN WITH LESS DRAG. IF YOU WANT TO EXTRACT ENERGY FROM THE WIND , THIS IS THE WAY TO DO IT. You can do the same. Note:. I used random parts and tried to keep the LED values low, with what I had on hand. Transistors are like electronic (one way) valves. The center leg controls the opening and closing or amplification of the valve. Using only that part of a PNP transistor, I devised my own diode for this experiment. Transistors replaced vacuum tubes. They are used mostly 2 ways. To amplify the signal passing through, or to act as an “electronic switch”. Current only goes through one way, and by increasing or decreasing the bias current on the center leg, you can control the flow though it. In most cases, adding even higher voltage, increases the output, thus making it an amplifier. Diodes allow electricity to go only one way, which makes a great gate. DC electricity’s electrons always flow from Negative to Positive. Same as Earth’s Negative electrons flying to a positive charge in the sky. AKA lightning. Yes, it is a scientific fact. ”VAWT” “Wind Turbine” Feel “free” to use any of these “concepts” in your “windmill” designs. The wing or plate that swings on a vertical rod has been around forever and the rest are just “conceptual designs” that I came up with. An engineer proficient using AVIs stress analysis application could determine structural integrity issues using these drawings. Who knows; maybe someone will perfect this “design concept” and build them to the same height as the large HAWTs. I (think) “Vertical Axis Wind Turbines” have the leverage potential to produce more power at lower wind speeds. I am amazed by the large HAWTs and many of the modern VAWTs but I hope that engineers, innovators and last but not least, financial risk takers will continue to find ways to lower the required wind speed.
