@sapien01 I think the best would be to build your own stator and rotor, the cheapest would be to find a free treadmill and use the free motor from that. I used a car alternator.

    nice job!

    im making one also!…

what kind of generator did you used?
    which is the best/chepest generator??

    thanks
    best regards!!

@trunk516 thanks for the heads up, I will try a 3 blade design too

Yes, do make the magnetic stator next time and also consider Magnetic levitation in the base as well. It seems to work very well for others and will move quite easily even light wind since there is very little resistance. Just a suggestion.

good idea, use two blades and look up the sandia blade design, they are most efficient. put your magnets under the unit and the coils on the base below them. there is lots of reference on savonius turbines and you would be suprised at what you’ll find.

    @joe18370 Wow… I was too… I’m kinda freaking out atm

Also, the larger the diameter, the more torque you will get. Remember that when you are generating power there is a resistance. Nice build though, just needs some tweaking. ;)

    Homestead!

you need a plate on the top to stabalize it, or it will fly apart in high winds

Just a thought, how about a Fibonacci number of blades; ie. 1,1,2,3,5,7,12 . . . . Like 3 for this base:blade chord ratio and 5 for the same blade chord on a larger base, etc. Maybe shoot for blades to “block” about one-third of the area.

Yeah, I know it’s a Fibonacci theme; but it works well in nature.

I think you are 100% correct. I did notice when I had fewer blades on it, it would catch the wind better. I will try three blades next time. Thanks

Wouldn’t three blades work better? I read somewhere that being solid like yours actually blocks some of the available wind. ??

YIKES ! support the top man, what are you thinkin ?

hi i like your new wind turbine alot, can you send me a parts list, ive got alternator wind generator, not happy with it ,would like to turn it into
a wind turbine like you have, the new one you built
    is nice,thank you

  14. supergokue1 — August 20, 2010 @ 1:53 pm

Hello, it did move around a lot not having the top braced. I will tell you though that it started to turn in light winds much faster that with the top on. With the top on, it took a faster wind to get it going. If you make one with no top I would love to see the video.

Hey Thanks for all your vids, they inspire me! Hey Just a quick question. Did it move around much not having the top braced? Just wondering as I’m about to build something similar. I also ponder if not having a top may allow the turbine to reach higher RPM in high winds situations, let the excess air escape type thing or am i just making this up lol :)

Yes, this will turn an alternater with a little wind. I do think the way I will go next time is to make the bottom into a copper wound rotor. Then underneath that I will make the magnet stator. Thank you for the question.

nice ,was thinking ,will this turn an alternater

smart thinking to use pvc. looks very easy to make like that, i think i making one off my one just like yours butt with more panels, Thanks!

  19. supergokue1 — August 20, 2010 @ 4:38 pm

This one is unfortunately not up any more. I have been thinking of building another one in the future. If I do, I will keep track of the output.
